South Africa gets facelifted Triton as CBU from Thailand

Mitsubishi is changing its Triton one-tonners in South Africa by offering a facelifted model that is imported as a fully built-up unit and not assembled locally, as has been the case in the past.

The new pick-ups will take over from the Triton line that was introduced in 2007 - the year when it replaced the Colt that has been in SA since 1990.

The Colt helped to propel Mitsubishi's success with sales of over 20 000 units.

The latest Triton models are made at a plant in Thailand that exports to all major first world countries for Mitsubishi Motors. That same plant has already exported more than a million vehicles since 1988 when it became the first Thai motor vehicle exporter and has won several quality awards for the units produced there.

Mitsubishi Motors South Africa opted for an import route for the Triton because it offers greater flexibility in terms of product specification and better supply rates than when a product is locked into local production.

The new range has an updated grille, headlights and front bumper as well as a new-look step bumper at the rear and restyled alloy wheels on all models.

Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service choose the L200 for Search and Rescue [UK]

Monday, 08 December 2008

MITSUBISHI SEALS URBAN FIRE AND RESCUE ROLE
~ Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service Choose The L200 For Their Specialist Requirements ~

Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service (BFRS) serves a population of over 707,000 people with an area stretching from the outskirts of London into the Midlands. Every year it receives over 21,000 calls for assistance, over 10,000 of which are for emergency incidents – that’s more than 27 emergency call-outs per day, every day.

L200s Called Into Service Within Hours
With the recent introduction of five Mitsubishi L200s to their fleet, the Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service (BFRS) has expanded its fleet to 170 vehicles – 115 cars and vans and 115 front-line vehicles including fire engines, Urban Search and Rescue lorries and special appliances such as turntable ladders and water carriers.

Jez Finden (Group Manager, Transport) commented that within hours of the two vehicles being registered with them they were out in action, helping with a number of incidents which occurred during a period of unusually heavy rain and flooding.

The L200 - A True Working Vehicle
Roy Harold (Area Manager, Property, Procurement & Transport) found that many vehicles in the same class as the L200 were aimed more at the leisure market than the demanding work environment: “we needed a vehicle that had AWD capability with a good ground clearance for use in adverse weather conditions such as snow and floods. Our Urban Search and Rescue teams have to cope with some of the most extreme and dangerous situations, so we needed vehicles that could go off-tarmac in a wide variety of emergency scenarios.”

Mitsubishi TMR Triton Concept [AU]

"New Mitsubishi TMR Triton Concept model"
Now on display at the Sydney Motor Show, 9th-19th October 2008

The design concept for the TMR Triton was to improve upon the great Triton base, by delivering
increased power, performance and handling, while remaining true to the toughness and dependability for which Triton is known. The TMR Triton is a concept vehicle which closely represents a production reality.

The 3.2L common rail turbo diesel engine in the Triton is well renowned for it’s high level of performance, but that didn’t stop TMR from improving on this excellent base. A TMR engine enhancement package has been applied to the Triton, meaning power has increased to an impressive 132kW @ 3,800rpm and torque to a phenomenal 450Nm @ 2,000rpm. These are increases of 12% and 31% respectively. Definitely more than enough to help get the tough jobs done or enjoy that long weekend away.

As the Triton is already a stylish recreational vehicle which stands out in a crowd, a few changes were all that were necessary to turn the TMR Triton into a real head turner. The addition of the sports head lamp kit along with the chrome upper and lower sports grilles has created a distinctive, tough yet sporty look. The finishing touch to the exterior package is the application of unique TMR Triton badging.

There is no point having all that power and torque if you can’t control it. Making a great handling vehicle is a job that the TMR team is used to. The first area addressed was the suspension, with Koni 8240 series shock absorbers fitted to the front and rear of the vehicle. The improved on road performance as a result of these suspension enhancements has not come at the expense of off road ability with standard vehicle ride height and ground clearances maintained.

The braking hardware has also been given a serious makeover to keep up with the newfound power. A specially developed front brake package has been fitted, consisting of large 4 piston calipers with 343mm x 29mm ventilated and slotted two piece discs with high performance Ferodo DS25HP brake pads. This enhancement, together with the original equipment ABS/EBD system ensures strong braking performance in all conditions.

To make the most of the improvements to power, handling and braking, and to enhance off road ability, a new set of wheels and tyres were selected. The stylish 18” x 8” Dakar alloy wheels neatly fit over the impressive front brake package. Pirelli Scorpion ATR 255/55R18 tyres with a symmetrical tread design delivers the all-terrain versatility needed on a vehicle like the TMR Triton. Excellent traction on every surface, reduced aquaplaning, top braking efficiency, the highest resistance to damage, and comfortable driving on sealed roads are all attributes of the Scorpion ATR’s.

The modern and luxurious interior has not escaped the upgrades. Quality stitched TMR logos have been added to the front and rear leather seats. Stainless steel scuff plates and full carpet mat set complete the TMR interior package.

The audio system has been improved with the addition of the highly functional Eclipse CD3200 Multi Source Sound System. This head unit has a powerful 50W x 4 internal amplifier along with USB input, integrated Bluetooth handsfree and full iPod control.

Combining the Tritons highly advanced Super Select 4WD system that allows operation in either 2WD, full time 4WD or 4WD high / low range and the expertly applied TMR upgrades results in a recreational vehicle that has exceptional on and off road performance and the ability to handle whatever challenges are faced.

Triton L200 pickup for export hits 1M mark after just 2 years

Mitsubishi Motors sets new record: 1,000,000 pick up trucks exported from Thailand

At the One Million Pick Up Export Ceremony
(Leam Chabang, Thailand)

At the One Million Pick Up Export Ceremony
(Leam Chabang, Thailand)

Patumtani, October 11, 2007 — Mitsubishi Motors (Thailand) Co. Ltd. (MMTh) today announced the successful export of one million pickup trucks. In addition, the company announced the new competitive Triton Million Edition, a customized domestic model.

Mitsubishi Motors (Thailand) Co. Ltd. announced the completion of the million-pickup goal after hitting its million-unit milestone (all vehicle types) last June. Mr. Michiro Imai, President of MMTh, released this statement regarding the company's success in exporting to over 140 countries worldwide:

"This success has not only proved the company's capability and potential in exports but has also shown that Thai-built Mitsubishi vehicles are of top quality. Its acceptance by customers worldwide is a credit to the skills of Thai people, and to Mitsubishi's advanced technology, which give the Triton* the attractive appearance, performance, and comfort it is known for. The Triton has become a symbol of MMTh's drive to excel and take its place as a world-leading automaker. Today's success is doubtless another step on that path, as well as a further step for Thailand toward becoming 'the Detroit of Asia'.

As pleased as I am with our current achievements, none would have been possible without the support of the Thai people, especially the government sectors who support our infrastructure and automobile industry policy, suppliers who provide high quality and punctual delivery, and logistic companies who also support that punctual delivery."

Mitsubishi has started business in Thailand since 1961. The company began manufacturing light-duty trucks and later expanded to sedans for domestic markets. Years later, because of the capability and potential of the company, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation Japan made the Thailand operation a production base for worldwide exports. This marked the first time in the history of Japan's automotive industry that pick up truck production was based outside Japan; it was also a first for Thailand.

The company's first export model was the Mitsubishi Champ, which went to Canada in 1988. The company went on to export the Mitsubishi L 200 Cyclone pick up truck to Portugal in 1989. Since then, exports have expanded to more than 140 countries worldwide, covering Europe, Australia, Latin America, Africa, and Asia. Over the years, all Mitsubishi pick up models (Cyclone, L200 Strada, and the Triton) have been manufactured at the production base (Leam Chabang Industrial Estate). Total pick up exports from Thailand in 2006 totaled 133,109 units; in 2007 the target is set higher at 140,000 units.

The new Triton, still just two years old, has already received more than 10 awards both domestically and internationally.

MMPC announces availability of new 3.2L 4x4 and 4x2 Stradas (Triton L200) [PH]

Mitsubishi Strada 3.2 4x4 and Strada 4x2 Now Available

Strada 3.2 GLS Sport 4x4

The Strada 4x4 GLS Sport will now be offered with the much awaited 3.2 liter engine option. The 4M41 engine produces 160Ps at 3,800 rpm and 35 Kg-m of torque at 2,000 rpm and it is equipped with a DOHC 16-valve cylinder head. Precise fuel delivery is made possible through the Direct Injection Diesel with Hyper Common Rail and it made more efficient and powerful through turbocharging and intercooling.

The 3.2L DI-D Engine

The new engine can either be matched to a 5-speed manual transmission or to an electronically controlled 4-speed automatic with overdrive and the rear differential now has a hybrid limited slip mechanism that is standard for the 3.2 liter GLS Sport. Either transmission delivers driving power through the Easy Select 4WD system. This rally proven four wheel drive system enables the driver to choose three drive modes namely. “2H” for smooth, paved highways, “4H” for wet and slippery surfaces, and “4LLc” for rough tracks. Users can also shift on the fly from “2H” to “4H” and back even while traveling at speeds up to 100 km/h.

The 3.2 4x4 GLS Sport will also have the same features as the current 2.5 4x4 GLS model which offers top-of-its-class comfort and convenience due to all-power amenities including the stylish dashboard, the first of its class 3-mode opening slide vent window, high grade sport fabric seat, leather wrapped steering wheel and shift knobs, silver-painted center and power window control panels, auto climate control, and a multi-information display monitor. Other amenities are high contrast meter cluster with silver accent rings, an FM/AM Single in-dash CD/MP3 player that is iPod ready via its USB interface, ignition key cylinder illumination, door courtesy lamps, and a host of useful and convenient compartments.

The 3.2 4x4 GLS Sport and 2.5 4x4 GLS models can only be distinguished by the higher wheel profile as the GLS Sport is equipped with muscular 265/70R16 profile tires versus the latter’s 245/70R16’s. Also only the 3.2 4x4 GLS Sport will have ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution or EBD, should the need for evasive maneuvering arises from emergency braking. Dual SRS front airbags, and tailgate mounted third brake lamp are standard safety items on both Strada 3.2 4x4 GLS Sport and 2.5 4x4 GLS.

Strada 3.2 GL 4x2

Other variants to be introduced to the market will be the Strada GL and the Strada GLX 4x2. These two wheel drive Stradas look exactly the same like its 4-wheel drive brother. The 4x2 Strada is equipped with the new 2.5 liter 4D56 Mitsubishi Direct Injection Diesel with Hyper Common Rail DOHC 16-valve Turbo Intercooled engine. Mitsubishi Motors has used the bore and stroke of the proven and reliable 4D56 engine and strengthened its internal components to withstand the additional power that results from the DOHC, 16-valve and Direct Injection Hyper Common Rail System. Maximum power output from this 2.5 liter engine is at 136PS @ 3,500 rpm and maximum torque is 314 N-m @ 2,000 rpm. The adoption of the DI-D Common Rail system enables the all-new Strada to deliver high output, flatter torque curve, low fuel consumption, clean emissions, and quiet operation. This new Direct Injection Diesel Common Rail engine is already Euro-2 compliant and is properly matched with the current diesel fuel in the country.

Inside the spacious cabin, the Strada 4x2 is equipped with power windows, central locking, high contrast instrument meters, CD player with FM/AM tuner stereo, and high grade sport-type fabric seats to name a few. Meantime, 16-inch aluminum alloy wheels fitted on 205/80R profile tires, front fog lamps, chrome features such as side mirrors and outside and inside door handles, side step board, high mount stop lamp on the rear bed plus dual airbags can be found on the GLX 4x2 model. The Strada GL model is targeted more towards fleet companies which prefers the same looks as the 4x4 model.

The all-new Strada will be available starting this August at all Mitsubishi dealers nationwide and will be available in 5 variants. The suggested retail prices (in Philippine Pesos) are as follows:

Strada 2.5 GL 4x2 M/T Php 833,000

Strada 2.5 GLX 4x2 M/T 908,000

Strada 2.5 GLS 4x4 M/T 1,110,000

Strada 2.5 GLS Sport 4x4 M/T 1,230,000

Strada 2.5 GLS Sport 4x4 A/T 1,280,000

Colors available are Deep Black Mica, Cool Silver, Fairy White, Titanium Gray Mica, Majestic Red, and Medium Blue Mica.

Mitsubishi L200 "Triton" Raging Bull Special Edition [UK]

‘RAGING BULL’ SPECIAL EDITION TO SCORE WITH L200 BUYERS
6 August 2007

Mitsubishi L200 "Triton" Raging Bull Special Edition for the UK Market

Mitsubishi Motors UK has joined forces with England rugby captain Phil Vickery, and Raging Bull Limited, to launch a special edition L200 pick-up. Badged the L200 Raging Bull to tie in with Vickery’s exclusive performance clothing company, the new model comes with £2,000 worth of extras for free.

Only available in vibrant Aztec Red and as a Double Cab vehicle, the L200 Raging Bull includes a number of unique features. Most obvious is the dramatic Raging Bull motif at the base of the driver and passenger doors. It’s also stitched into the back support of the leather front seats, and stamped into the front door entry guards.

The front is defined by striking chrome resin guard inserts and a stunning chromed sports grille, flanked by stainless steel headlamp and indicator bezels. At the rear is a stylish step bumper to aid entry into the load bed, and rear stainless steel lamp bezels. The L200 Raging Bull is fitted with functional load liner – made of durable ribbed black plastic – with an integrated and lockable storage box against the cab’s rear bulkhead.

Interior features that are standard on the L200 Raging Bull include Trafficmaster’s award-winning Smartnav navigation system with integrated dashboard touch screen.

The L200 Raging Bull is based on the Warrior model, which means equipment levels are already high. Externally there are stainless steel sidesteps, chromed door handles, graphite grey wheel arch extensions and 17-inch alloys. Inside owners benefit from climate control air-conditioning, leather steering wheel and shift knobs, privacy glass and a six-speaker audio system.

Power comes from the L200’s acclaimed 2.5-litre 136PS DI-D common-rail diesel engine. It’s linked to a Super Select 4WD system via a five-speed manual gearbox, and comes with Mitsubishi Active Stability and Traction Control (M-ASTC). The L200 Raging Bull is also available with a four-speed automatic transmission.

Vickery commented: “The L200 is powerful, tough and rugged, yet great to look at. The synergy between the L200, rugby and Raging Bull’s performance clothing makes great sense. Combining style, action and attention to detail, we see great potential in partnering with Mitsubishi as we introduce our new ranges of sports and leisure clothing, later this year.”
“We are delighted to be associated with Phil Vickery and his Raging Bull company,” said Managing Director of Mitsubishi Motors UK, Jim Tyrrell. “Mitsubishi has long been associated with active sports, in particular with rugby. The L200 is a perfect vehicle for this association, being tough and versatile with rugged good looks, just like Phil!”

The L200 Raging Bull costs just £19,249. That’s £2,000 more than the standard Warrior, but with almost £4,000 worth of extras included it represents excellent value for money. There will be an initial batch of 500 units.

EVORA (Portugal) – Repsol Mitsubishi Ralliart Team drivers Joan ‘Nani’ Roma and Luc Alphand held first and third positions after a thrilling second leg of the Vodafone Transiberico Rally, round three of the 2006 FIA Cross-Country Rally World Cup, today (Saturday).

Spaniard Joan ‘Nani’ Roma and Andorra-based co-driver Henri Magne began the day with a 4.5 second lead and arrived in Evora with an advantage of a mere nine seconds in the overall standings, after setting the fastest time on the second stage of the day to compensate for losing time behind three quad bikes on the opening special.

“I was running so well on the first stage and then we caught three quads and it was impossible to overtake,” said Roma. “The Portuguese Federation said that it was unnecessary for them to have a Sentinel system, so I just couldn’t get passed. I was on full attack for many kilometres and then I lost all the time behind the quads. It was so frustrating. The stage was difficult, but I cannot understand why they did not put a Sentinel system on the quads.”

French team mates Luc Alphand and Gilles Picard began the day in fourth place and tackled the first stage behind Volkswagen’s Giniel de Villiers. They moved into a tie for second overall after setting the second fastest time in SS2 and finished the day in third overall, courtesy of the third quickest time on the second run.

“I started cautiously this morning,” said Alphand. “I was still a little nervous after the accident in Tunisia. To balance the car we adjusted the brake bias to the front, but I was maybe a little too careful this morning early in the stage. When I realised that I was around a minute behind I decided to push harder. I enjoyed this special. I remembered it well from three years ago when I was here with BMW. It was exactly the same stage – narrow between the trees.

“The key is to be smooth, control the car carefully and maintain your concentration. We had no dust, just lost a little time behind a couple of bikes. There are still two more days, so I did not intend to push this afternoon. It was all about avoiding punctures and getting the confidence back.”

Today’s competitive action was centred around remote terrain to the north-east of Lisbon in the area between Montemor-o-Novo, Santarem and Ponte de Sor. A varied 258.82 km stage was run in a clockwise direction, starting and finishing in a scenic parkland service park, north of the village of Mora. The special featured several potentially tricky river crossings and numerous narrow tree-lined tracks in rural farmland in the Alentejo region.

Local national champion Armindo Araújo and French co-driver Pascal Maimon began the day in second overall in a Mitsubishi L200 Strakar, prepared by Mitsubishi Motors Portugal, and were running ahead of Roma and leading the rally outright when the gearbox failed suddenly around 60 km into the stage.

Following the Portuguese driver‘s demise, Roma and De Villiers became locked in a frantic tussle for the fastest time in SS2, with Alphand 26s adrift in third overall after 115 km. Roma gradually pulled a handful of seconds clear of De Villiers, but the South African fought back and was three seconds ahead after 153 km, 23s in front at 168 km and 49s up at 225 km. He eventually finished the stage 41s ahead of Roma and 27s in front of a resurgent Alphand, who set the second fastest time after a late flurry.

The stage was repeated at 14.00 hrs on Saturday afternoon and De Villiers took an overall 32s lead over a tying Roma and Alphand into the special. Benefiting from a clearer track, Roma led his team mate by 24s and De Villiers by 43s at PC1 after 63 km and extended his advantage over De Villiers to 1m 11s and Alphand to 55s at the PC2 point after 143.78 km.

The Spaniard was 53s ahead of De Villiers at the 195.21 km point (PC3) and reached the finish of the stage 45s ahead, to enter the overnight halt with a slender nine-second advantage in the overall classification.

‘This was a short stage on a sprint-type event,” said MMSP’s Team Director Dominique Serieys. “This is not the type of race where you can expect to gain 15 minutes in one stage. I suppose it is a blend of a WRC event and a Cross-Country Rally. Luc took it easy on the first lap, just to find his confidence, but I am quite happy after the first long day with our position.”

Tomorrow (Sunday), the Repsol Mitsubishi Ralliart Team will tackle two timed runs through a 155.74 km special stage across the border in Spain. A 152.16 km liaison will take crews from the overnight halt in Evora to the Spanish town of Alburquerque, which will also be the location of the service park. After the two timed specials, a 74.66 km liaison will guide teams into the overnight halt at Cåceres.
