ASX Production commences in Malaysia

Mitsubishi Motors Announces Commencement of Assembly and Sale of ASX Compact SUV in Malaysia

Malaysia-made Mitsubishi ASX

TOKYO, January 21, 2014 - Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) announced today that local assembly of the ASX (RVR or Outlander Sport in other markets) in Malaysia has commenced.
The ASX is being assembled at Tan Chong Motor Assemblies (TCMA), consigned assembler of Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. (MMM), and will be sold from February through MMM's sales network throughout the country.

Mr. Morikazu Chokki, Senior Executive Officer, attended the line-off ceremony held on January 21, 2014 at TCMA's plant and noted the importance of the move: "Since the establishment of Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia in January 2005, the Mitsubishi Motors brand has indeed achieved remarkable progress. I deeply believe the locally-produced ASX is an important step for further growth here. While this is our first time to introduce a made-in-Malaysia model, I am strongly confident that the made-in-Malaysia ASX will provide the Malaysian people with top levels of safety and reliability".

One major pillar of MMC's New Stage 2016 next mid-term business plan, which is to start from April 2014 is to reinforce its production base in ASEAN countries. Local production and sales of the ASX in Malaysia will be a part of that pillar.

MMC will continue to strengthen its operations towards improving and solidifying brand presence in the Malaysian market, which is expected to maintain growth, by further expanding its product lineup through various measures including but not limited to adding more locally-produced models.

Proton and Mitsubishi Motors to Pursue Broad Ranging Strategic Collaboration

Proton and Mitsubishi Motors to Pursue Broad Ranging Strategic Collaboration

Shah Alam / Tokyo, 15 September, 2011 - PROTON Holdings Berhad (PROTON) and Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) announced today that they are in serious discussion for strategic collaboration to further strengthen the competitiveness of both PROTON and MMC in the global marketplace.

The collaborative items being considered between the two parties are set to cover areas and activities such as:
  • Joint production of engines in Malaysia
  • Consignment production of MMC-brand vehicles at PROTON facilities
  • Sharing of major parts and components between MMC's "Global Small", which is to be launched next March starting in Thailand, and PROTON's upcoming "Global Small Car"
  • Provision of MMC's future technologies such as electric, plug-in hybrid and hybrid vehicle technology

The two companies had jointly proceeded with feasibility studies since late 2010 and have identified these areas of collaboration that could be expected to provide both parties with the right synergy in the pursuit of global competitiveness.

Cooperation between PROTON and MMC, ever since PROTON's inception as the country's first car manufacturer and driver of the national automotive industry development has proven to be a long lasting business affiliation. The two companies had signed an agreement in December 2008 on the development and production of new vehicles at PROTON. Under a license agreement, PROTON currently produces 'Inspira', a four-door sedan model based on an MMC vehicle.

The latest discussion between the companies aims to provide yet another win-win relationship where MMC will be able to expand its presence in the ASEAN market while PROTON will be able to also expand its line-up and make effective use of its production facilities. A new strategic collaboration, supported by the growth of both companies since their first collaboration 26 years ago, is certainly a natural progression for both parties in taking their business relationship to a much more significant and impactful level in view of the ever competitive automotive landscape.

Mitsubishi Triton RA Edition bound for Malaysia

Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia has introduced the Triton RA Edition, which is limited to 500 units. The “rally inspired” RA Edition is based on the Triton 2.5 A/T, which means it’s powered by Mitsubishi’s 2.5-litre DI-D commonrail diesel engine with 136 PS and 314 Nm of torque. This comes after MMM launched the Lancer Sportback RA Edition last month.

As with any limited edition, there’s more kit to be had. The Triton RA Edition comes with an accessory package that includes a tonneau cover, bumper extender, body stickers, window visor, Ralliart logo embroidered on the seats, aluminium scuff plate, Triton RA carpet mats and Ralliart emblems. There’s also a limited edition serial number in the cabin. The RA Edition is only available in Black Mica or White Solid.

Inside, the RA’s centre stack houses an LCD touch screen entertainment system with built-in GPS navigation. The full colour screen also doubles up as a display for the reverse camera, while the seats are covered in leather.

For the rather long list of added kit, and the exclusivity, one needs to part with RM103,980 on the road inclusive of insurance, decent value when the standard Triton 2.5 A/T is priced at RM95,980. The Triton is imported CBU from Thailand.
