Flex Fuel Mitsubishi Pajero Sport to compete in the 2010 Dakar under a New Category

World's Most Prominent Rally Race, Dakar Debuts New 'Ethanol' Category in 2010 with Support from Brazil's Sugarcane Industry

SAO PAULO, Sept. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- For the first time in its 31-year history, the world's largest rally competition, formerly known as Paris-Dakar, will include in its 2010 edition a category in which competing vehicles will run on ethanol. The new category was introduced by the organizers at the request of Brazilian rally veteran and former Paris-Dakar winner Klever Kolberg, who will drive the first-ever flex-fuel vehicle to take part in the prestigious race next year -- a Brazilian-made 2010 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport model equipped with flex-fuel technology, with support from the Brazilian Sugarcane Industry Association (UNICA).

Kolberg, who finished first in the 1993 competition in the "marathon motorcycles" category, appropriately launched his 2010 renewable fuel effort at the world's largest fair dedicated to the sugar-energy industry, the annual Fenasucro, held in the town of Sertaozinho in the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo, the heart of Brazil's sugarcane industry. After a news conference at the UNICA booth, Kolberg held a one-hour autograph-signing session next to one of his training vehicles, on exhibit during the four-day event.

"Professional sport has always been aligned with the business world and sustainability has been at the top of the agenda for quite some time. Today it is easier to get to any part of the world, and the Rally Dakar is proof of that. The question is what fuel will we use, and if we choose clean energy, the world thanks us," said Kolberg, who was also the first Brazilian ever to face the challenges of the Paris-Dakar race in 1988, when it was held mostly in Africa.

"I left behind a comfortable situation, in which my previous rally team was widely supported, to pursue this project which I believe will be extremely important for the sport and the Dakar itself, given its worldwide presence. And I'm receiving a great deal of support from competitors who want the Ethanol Category to be a success," adds Kolberg.

MITSUBISHI MOTORS CORPORATION SIGNS MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING WITH THE CLINTON CLIMATE INITIATIVE

- Win-Win for Popularisation of Electric Vehicles -

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) has signed a cooperative Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) regarding the popularisation of electric vehicles (EV) with the Clinton Climate Initiative (CCI), a program of the William J. Clinton Foundation. The move signifies MMC's commitment to "Leading the EV era, towards a sustainable future" as laid out in its "Mitsubishi Group Environmental Vision 2020," MMC's environmental policy, part of which is to proactively collaborate with various partners in creating a pleasing and low-carbon society.

The move is also part of the C40 Electric Vehicle Network, announced on December 16 at the Climate Summit for Mayors in Copenhagen. The C40 is a group of cities that are committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, of which CCI is the implementation partner. The Clinton Climate Initiative works with C40 partner cities*1 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through projects such as energy efficiency building retrofits, waste management and transportation.

Through the newly formed C40 Electric Vehicle Network, some of the world's largest cities have committed to take steps over the next year to collectively address the key areas of municipal action critical to successful introduction of electric vehicles. MMC has agreed to work together with the Clinton Climate Initiative and the C40 Electric Vehicle Network to help develop cities' electric vehicle policies, vehicle procurement and infrastructure decisions through advice on vehicle specifications, charging parameters and incentives.

MMC is committed to making progress toward its stated goal of having 20% of total production as either electric or plug-in hybrid electric vehicles by 2020. It also introduced the new-generation MMC electric vehicle, the i-MiEV, in Japan this summer and has already delivered more than 800 of these innovative vehicles to date with plans to roll out the vehicle globally.

JMB Stradale Racing buys MMSP's Racing Lancer, fielding 5 member team in 2010 Dakar

JMB Stradale Racing buys MMSP's Racing Lancer, fielding 5 member team in 2010 Dakar

Team JMB Stradale Mitsubishi

It’s not rocket science to see the fact that German car maker Volkswagen has dominated the latest edition of the Dakar Rally in great fashion. The South American event this year was practically an all-VW affair all the way, only the racer driving it being the unknown factor in the 2009 equation.

That’s probably why Japanese manufacturer Mitsubishi chose to withdraw from the event completely at the end of the 2009 rally. Although there may be some other reasons behind that decision - the economic downturn cannot be neglected also - what’s certain is the fact that the aforementioned constructor will not be joining the Dakar caravan as a works team from now on.

However, in terms of private efforts, it was today confirmed that French firm JMB Stradale purchased no less than 5 Mitsubishi Pajeros in order to field them in the 2010 Dakar Rally, an event hosted for the second time in a row by the South American continent (and based in Argentina).

JMB’s team will be comprised of drivers Carlos Sousa, Miguel Barbosa, Guilherme Spinelli, Orlando Terranova, Nicholas Mislin (who will also be team owner), alongside team manager Dominique Serieys.

UK fast charging system for i-MiEV 80% capacity in 30 minutes [UK]

0 - 80 IN 30 MINUTES: MITSUBISHI MOTORS UK – THE FIRST IN EUROPE TO FAST CHARGE THE i-MIEV

Mitsubishi Motors UK is the first company in Europe to be showcasing the fast charge function of the all-electric i-MiEV city car.

Fast Charge Specifications
The fast charger, supplied by Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), allows the i-MiEV to recharge from flat to eighty per cent full in just 30 minutes.

The charger’s key specification includes:

* 3-phase 400V input
* DC out power of 50kW
* Maximum DC output voltage of 500V
* Maximum DC output current of 100 amperes
* Stand-alone unit measuring approximately 200 x 100 x 80 cms (h x w x d)

Greater Scope For “City Hopping”
You can already commute from Brighton to Central London on a daily basis in the i-MiEV, but the option to quick charge at motorway service areas and superstore car parks gives this multi award winning city car even more scope for longer journeys and greater convenience for the end user.

The average daily journey in the UK, however, is estimated to be less than 30 miles, so vehicle owners can already use their three-pin socket domestic supply, which costs less than a Pound for a full charge. Those with a longer commute can easily ‘refill’ at their workplace before the journey home.

MITSUBISHI i-MiEV LAUNCHES UK’S LARGEST PUBLIC ELECTRIC CAR TRIAL IN WEST MIDLANDS

The Mitsubishi i-MiEV has today become the first zero emissions fully electric city car to be used on the government funded Technology Strategy Board user trials.

It has a top speed of 81 mph, a range of 100 miles1 and can be trickle charged from flat to full in seven hours at any UK three-pin socket – costing under £1 for a full charge. In addition the i-MiEV can be fast-charged from flat to 80 per cent in just 30 minutes using the quick charger.

Mr Genichiro Nishina, President and CEO of Mitsubishi Motors Europe, said: “Mitsubishi Motors takes an holistic approach to environmental and sustainability issues at every stage of the vehicle’s design, production and in-service lifecycle. The i-MiEV is the most prominent element of our basket of environmental solutions, which makes the prospect of ultra-low carbon transport a present-day reality”.

Petter Solberg will drive a C4 again in 2010

Solberg: Citroen offer looking best for 2010

Norway's Petter Solberg looks likely to join Kimi Raikkonen as a C4 World Rally Car driver next season, after being made an attractive offer by Citroen.

Solberg, who won the 2003 World Championship with Subaru, tackled most of the 2009 series in a privately entered Xsara WRC, before accepting an offer to drive a Citroen Junior Team C4 WRC for the final two rounds.

With little chance of a manufacturer-funded programme in 2010, Solberg decided to go it alone once again, and try to raise the money himself for a season in a top-level World Rally Car - either a Ford Focus RS WRC or a Citroen C4 WRC.

Kimi Raikkonen to drive with Citroen

Kimi Raikkonen to Citroen - it’s official!

Finland's 2007 Formula One champion Kimi Raikkonen has signed a deal to drive a C4 World Rally Car on 12 rounds of the 2010 World Rally Championship.

This morning's long awaited announcement from Citroen Racing brings an end to weeks of speculation concerning the F1 star's plans for 2010, when he will take a sabbatical from his Grand Prix career.

Raikkonen will drive for Citroen's second squad, the Junior World Rally Team, thanks to backing from Red Bull - one of his personal sponsors from F1. He will be co-driven by fellow Finn Kaj Lindstrom, who previously partnered multiple WRC champion Tommi Makinen. The only rally the pair will miss next year is Rally New Zealand - an event the Junior Team is skipping altogether.

“I always wanted to compete in rally, especially in the World Rally Championship at some point in my career," said Raikkonen. "Thanks to Red Bull, I have the opportunity to drive the best car of the series with the Citroen C4. This is a new but very exciting challenge. For the moment we have a one-year contract and we will see how it goes for the future. I am really looking forward to testing the car and taking the start of the first rally.”

Partnering Raikkonen at the Citroen Junior team in 2010, will be French rising star Sebastien Ogier, 25, who will also drive a Red Bull-backed C4.

MMC and Japan Delivery Services (JDS) develops i-CHARGER system [JP]

System utilizes existing “delivery box” systems and makes electric vehicle charging and charging management possible for apartment parking lots

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) and Japan Delivery System Corporation (JDS)* have jointly developed an electric vehicle (EV) charging system for apartment complexes. The system, called i-CHARGER, is to be sold by JDS starting from December 1.

Installation and management of EV charging infrastructure for shared parking lots of apartment complexes is an issue in Japan for the popularization of electric vehicles. The i-CHARGER solves this problem by utilizing existing “delivery box” systems. Utilizing the authentication capability of the “delivery box” system, the i-CHARGER can manage who, when, and how much electricity was used, making it easy for apartment complex supervisors to sort out electricity usage of the building’s tenants.

At present the i-CHARGER is aimed at apartment complex residents who own an electric vehicle, however once the reservation system that is currently under development is completed, electric vehicle sharing in apartment complexes becomes possible, greatly contributing to the spread of charging infrastructure.

*JDS is involved in the management, sales, and construction of “delivery box” systems for apartment complexes in Japan and holds a 40% market share.

Mitsubishi Colt is coming to America

Mitsubishi Colt is coming to America

Buried deep within Mitsubishi's (re)presentation of its PX-MiEV plug-in hybrid concept from the Tokyo Motor Show was a line about a global small car that Mitsubishi will be bringing to the US in 2010. That's it, one line. We didn't think too much of the announcement until Mitsubishi's Product Communications Manager Moe Durand walked up and said, "In case you missed it, the small car is the Colt." Dang!

Dang because we really like the new EVO-nosed Colt, especially in Ralliart trim. Additionally, now is a wonderful time to bring over a small car. Don't believe us? Just ask Ford (Fiesta) and Mazda (Mazda2). The Colt will be going up against some pretty hefty (albeit lightweight) competition in the form of established B-segmenters like the Honda Fit, Toyota Yaris and Nissan Versa.

Electric Garbage Collection Truck to be powered by MMC's EV Battery System [JP]

Kyokuto Kaihatsu Kogyo Co., Ltd.'s "Electric Garbage Collection Truck" to be Installed with Mitsubishi Motors Corporation's Electric Vehicle Battery System

- Trash Compactor to be Driven by Electricity -

TOKYO, September 28, 2009— Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC), will supply battery*1 systems from its new-generation electric vehicle (EV) i-MiEV to Kyokuto Kaihatsu Kogyo Co., Ltd. Kyokuto Kaihatsu Kogyo Co., Ltd. now introduces eco-friendly garbage collection with its all-new battery-powered trash compactor utilizing the power supply system developed for Mitsubishi Motors' i-MiEV in its garbage collection trucks.

Current trash compactors on garbage collection trucks run on power from the truck's engine. This means that during garbage collection and ejection the engine must always be running, increasing noise and environmental pollution in the process.

Looking for an environmentally-friendly solution, Kyokuto Kaihatsu Kogyo Co., Ltd. worked on developing electric-powered trash compactors for its trucks for the past few years. During development, it was found that the battery system used in MMC's i-MiEV fulfilled the necessary specifications for an electric-powered trash compactor, so it was decided to use MMC's battery system to power trash compactor to create an "electric garbage collection truck."

2009 Peugeot iOn Concept, based on the Mitsubishi i-MiEV

Peugeot Ion Concept

2009 Peugeot iOn Concept

Peugeot, the pioneer and 1st worldwide manufacturer of electric vehicles will be launching the Peugeot iOn at the end of 2010. Its performance and 130 km operating range is obtained in particular due to the use of lithium-ion batteries, which will provide an efficient response to the challenges of urban mobility and respect for the environment.

With the Peugeot iOn Concept, which will be presented to the world for the 1st time at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, Peugeot is incorporating the latest automotive edition into its model range.

With the Peugeot 106 produced between 1995 and 2003, Peugeot, the pioneer in electric vehicles, remains to this day the manufacturer having sold the most "zero-emissions" cars in the world.

Supported by this history, the Lion Brand intends to continue as a major player in the new market of electric vehicles. Therefore, from the end of 2010, Peugeot will be amongst the first to launch a new all-electric vehicle in Europe: the Peugeot iOn.

From launch, this electric vehicle developed in cooperation with Mitsubishi Motor Corporation (MMC), is aimed at both retail and fleet customers (authorities, local organisations and large companies, etc.) due its specifications which are particularly suited for use in an urban environment.

Lithium-ion batteries rechargeable in six hours and 80% recharged within thirty minutes

The town will therefore be the favourite playground of the Peugeot iOn Concept. With four doors and four seats, a length of 3.48 m and a turning circle of 4.50 m, this all-electric Peugeot vehicle will develop a maximum power output of 47 kW (64 bhp) and a torque of 180 Nm, thus offering reliable levels of performance (maximum speed of 130 km/h). Equipped with a totally comfortable operating range (130 km standard European cycle), the lithium-ion car batteries are rechargeable in six hours using a conventional 220 V socket or recharged to 80% capacity within thirty minutes, thanks to its fast charging system.
Peugeot Ion Concept

These specifications allow this "zero-emission" city car to offer a good level of versatility, comparable in performance and comfort to a small conventional combustion engine vehicle.

Its respect for the environment par excellence, its compact size, safety and simple operation will be its best, but by no means only attributes.

In fact, onboard it will also include some innovative services, thanks in particular to the "localised communication unit". This unit not only authorises the emergency call system for which Peugeot is a leader in terms of deployment throughout Europe (location of vehicles at the time of an accident and triggering the dispatch of suitable emergency services) but also authorises data transfer (battery status, distance covered, distance to travel before maintenance is due, etc.) thus providing assistance in the business management of fleet vehicles.

A further illustration of the brand's environmental strategy Peugeot iOn Concept illustrates Peugeot's commitment to integrate the new automotive edition by offering lots of solutions suited to the different needs of urban mobility.

This car also represents one of the key factors of the Brand's strategy to reduce the environmental footprint and dependence on fossil fuels.

As such, from the end of 2010 onwards, customers will discover some additional solutions within the model range:

* the Peugeot iOn coming at the end of 2010, is an all-electric vehicle for everyday urban use.
* The Peugeot 3008 HYbrid4, arriving in spring 2011, will be equipped with technology offering a versatile range of use (147 kW / 200 bhp, 4-wheel drive, etc, with CO2 emissions reduced to 99g/km).

These products will complete a range of combustion engines with some even higher performance engine units in both diesel HDi FAP and petrol variants (VTi and THP technology); engines which are already particularly well placed in their respective segments: 107 with 106 g/km of CO2, 207 with 99g, 308 with 120g, 3008 with 130g and 407 with 129g.

Mitsubishi signs agreement to produce Peugeot and Citroen version of i-MiEV

New Step in the Electric Vehicles cooperative agreement between Mitsubishi Motors Corporation and PSA Peugeot Citroën.

Paris/Tokyo, September 4, 2009 Osamu Masuko, CEO of Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC), and Philippe Varin, CEO of PSA Peugeot Citroën, signed today in Paris a cooperative agreement that signifies a new step in their partnership on electric vehicles (EV).

The main points of this cooperative agreement are:

# The development of an EV for the European market based on MMC's Japanese i-MiEV*1 model
# The vehicle is to be sold in Europe, with both Peugeot and Citroën versions
# Production is planned to commence in October 2010 for commercial launch in the European market by the end of 2010.

MMC first launched the new-generation EV i-MiEV in Japan in June, and will begin global sales of the right-hand drive vehicle this year. MMC has plans to expand rollout of the i-MiEV in left-hand drive markets in fiscal year 2010.

For PSA Peugeot Citroën this new EV will further enrich its range of low-emission vehicles; along with its hybrid diesel technology to be launched in 2011 on the Peugeot 3008 HYbrid4 and Citroën DS5 HYbrid4, and a Plug-In HYbrid4 diesel in 2012, PSA Peugeot Citroën confirms its aim to be a step ahead in pioneering vehicles with low CO2 emissions.

Mitsubishi Outlander named Top 10 Pet Safe Vehicles [US]

Mitsubishi Outlander Goes to the Dogs
Edmunds.com and Bark Buckle UP Select Outlander as a Top Pet Safe Vehicle

August 20, 2009 --CYPRESS, Calif. --
The Mitsubishi Outlander CUV was named one of the Top 10 Pet Safe Vehicles by Edmunds.com and the pet safety experts from Bark Buckle UP. The collaborative effort's list praises the Outlander for having plenty of room and pet safety features that makes driving with pets safer and more convenient.

There are 71 million pet owners in America, and 82 percent of dogs travel in cars during their lifetime. However, 98 percent of the dogs travel unrestrained in moving vehicles, leaving pets and passengers vulnerable to injury in the event of a traffic accident, according to Bark Buckle UP statistics. In a 35 mile per hour collision, an unrestrained 60-pound pet becomes a 2,700-pound projectile and can do much harm to other passengers.

In announcing the Mitsubishi Outlander, Edmunds.com wrote: Side airbags, five-star crash test ratings and steering-wheel-mounted auxiliary controls are all part of the Outlander's arsenal of available offerings. The CUV also boasts fold-flat seating and stowable third-row seats (both of which increase the amount of room available for larger pets), as well as more than a dozen storage compartments for your gear and your pet's.

Throughout Southern California this summer, Mitsubishi has been deploying "K-9" teams to dog parks and beaches, offering free treats and foldable travel water bowls. "Pet owners' responses have been overwhelming," said Frances Oda, vice president of marketing at Mitsubishi Motors North America. "Owners are appreciative of Mitsubishi's added attention toward pet safety and comfort, while our furry friends enjoy lapping up fresh, cool water during their playtime."

Lancer Sportback arrives in dealerships today [US]

Mitsubishi Motors Announces Pricing for Versatile Five-Door Lancer Sportback; Newest Model Begins Arriving in Dealerships Aug. 17

August 6, 2009 --CYPRESS, Calif. --
Mitsubishi Motors North America (MMNA) today announced pricing for its newest addition to the multiple award-winning Lancer lineup - the versatile five-door 2010 Lancer Sportback GTS and Ralliart. The Lancer Sportback carries with it similar distinctive and aggressive styling as the rally-inspired Lancer Evolution, yet with greater flexibility to accommodate active lifestyles.

Lancer Sportback

The economical Lancer Sportback GTS features Mitsubishi's efficient 2.4-liter engine with 168 horsepower and 167 pound-feet of torque. MSRP for the GTS with a five-speed manual transmission is $19,190, while the six-speed CVT automatic transmission with magnesium paddle shifters starts at an MSRP of $20,190.

The Lancer Sportback Ralliart is powered by Mitsubishi's 2.0-liter MIVEC turbocharged engine that pumps out 237 horsepower and 253 lb.-ft. of torque. All-Wheel Control (AWC) with Active Center Differential (ACD) is standard, as is the quick-shifting six-speed Twin Clutch-Sportronic® Shift Transmission (TC-SST) and magnesium paddle shifters that it shares with the high performance Lancer Evolution. The Lancer Sportback Ralliart starts at an MSRP of $27,590.

"Today's new car buyers are moving toward smaller, fuel efficient cars, and yet, there is still a need for cargo capacity. The Lancer Sportback's carrying capacity, coupled with a more aggressive design than contemporary hatchbacks, perfectly fills the void," explains Bryan Arnett, manager of product strategy of MMNA.

Mitsubishi designers created a dynamic and fluid shape for the Sportback that is instantly recognizable as a Lancer from the front, with its signature "jet fighter" grille, while being completely fresh from the C-pillar rearward. The sleek sloping rear door with integrated roof wing creates a visually distinctive shape while making the Lancer significantly more versatile. The door extends down to the rear bumper to make loading cumbersome objects like surfboards, camping gear and bicycles as easy as possible.

The Lancer Sportback's overall length is just slightly longer than the Lancer four-door sedan, yet it gains substantial cargo-carrying flexibility--especially when the 60:40-split rear seats are folded flat by its one-touch auto-folding feature. To add still more volume, the rear cargo floor of the GTS can be cleverly lowered three inches, yielding 52.7 cubic ft. maximum cargo space. The roof will also conveniently accommodate a plug-in Thule® Sport Rack for additional flexibility.

Premium interior features like those found on the Lancer sedans are also part of the Sportback's resume. Key components in the Ralliart version include a standard 140-watt CD/MP3 audio system with six speakers or an available 710-watt Rockford-Fosgate Premium Sound System, in-dash CD changer with MP3 capability, plus Sirius Satellite Radio. A hard disc-drive navigation system with Mitsubishi's exclusive Diamond Lane Guidance to provide route guidance is optional, as are Recaro sport seats that provide optimal support for the driver and front passenger.

Safety Features
Standard safety features in all Lancer models include an advanced dual front air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) with occupant sensors, front seat-mounted side-impact air bags and side curtain air bags, plus a driver's knee air bag. Active Stability Control (ASC) also comes on every Lancer Sportback, and the GTS is equipped with Reinforced Impact Safety Engineering (RISE), a unibody construction designed to help absorb energy in a collision. Every Lancer Sportback has a built-in Anti-Theft system with immobilizer key, and the Touring Package adds HID (high intensity discharge) headlamps.

Lancer Sportback Ralliart

Premium Warranty
The 2010 Lancer Sportback GTS and Ralliart have comprehensive bumper-to-bumper warranties. The GTS comes with a 10-year/100,000 mile powertrain limited warranty with a fully transferable 5-year/60,000 mile warranty for subsequent owners, and a 5-year/60,000 mile bumper-to-bumper limited warranty. The Ralliart offers a fully transferable 5-year/60,000 mile powertrain package and a 3-year/36,000 mile bumper-to-bumper limited warranty. Both the GTS and Ralliart come with a 7-year/100,000 mile anti-corrosion/perforation limited warranty and 5-year unlimited miles Roadside Assistance benefits.

Former British Rally Champion and Mitsubishi works driver, Alister McRae, will drive the MML Sports Ltd Mitsubishi Lancer World Rally Car and EvoX Group N rally car at this year’s Rallyday.

Alister has a long association with MML Sports, having driven for the Mitsubishi works team in 2002 and also, on a personal level with MML Sports’ Managing Director, John Easton. Before joining Ralliart Europe, which went on to become MML Sports in 2008, John was Chief Engineer on the Nissan rally program and was instrumental in Alister’s early career success with the Japanese marque.

Alister is returning to the UK from his home in Western Australia for the event and is looking forward to driving both the Lancer World Rally Car, which he has already sampled and the Group N EvoX, which will be his first taste of the MML Sport version.

“I’m looking forward to being back at Castle Combe for Rallyday this year,” said the Scot. “The last time I was there was in 2005 and I thoroughly enjoyed it, so it should be fun this year. In fact, especially as I will be driving the two Mitsubishi rally cars. I have a huge amount of fond memories of the World Rally Championship with Mitsubishi and it will be fantastic to catch up with the team and drive the WRCar and the EvoX.

“I actually drove the WRCar at Goodwood on the gravel stage a few years ago, just before Mitsubishi withdrew from rallying and was impressed with it. I gather that MML Sports has carried on making improvements to it, so I am looking forward to seeing how it drives now, as I’m sure it’s still a very good car.

“I’m also keen to see what the Group N car is like. I know Guy [Wilks] has driven it and was impressed, so I’m looking forward to that also.”

Managing Director of MML Sports Ltd John Easton is also pleased that Alister will be returning to the Mitsubishi fold, albeit for just the one day. “I’m delighted that Alister will be driving both the Lancer WRCar and the Group N EvoX at this year’s Rallyday. I’ve personally known Alister for some 15 years and have worked with him for almost as long, so it will be a pleasure to see him driving our cars again.

“Not only is Alister an extremely competitive driver, he’s also a showman and at an event like Rallyday, will make sure that the fans are treated to a display to remember.”

This year’s Rallyday takes place at Castle Combe racetrack in Wiltshire on Saturday 19 September. For more information, go to www.Rallyday.com.

Outlander GT Prototype

Building on the success of the Mitsubishi Outlander, Mitsubishi Motors North America today conducted the World debut of a distinctive new model that takes the compact SUV to another new level of performance and sportiness - the Mitsubishi Outlander GT Prototype. The all-new design study is the centerpiece of the Mitsubishi Motors exhibit at the New York International Auto Show, which continues through April 19.

The Diamond white Outlander GT Prototype infuses performance and design inspiration from Mitsubishi's Lancer sport sedans and provides clear indicators of the future of Outlander.

"The Outlander GT Prototype is packed with technology, performance and premium features that are uncommon in the compact SUV class," commented John Koenig, executive vice president of Mitsubishi Motors North America. "Along with its faster heartbeat, we also wanted to quicken pulses by channeling the look of our sportiest cars."

A front grille design inspired by the Lancer Evolution's "jet fighter" look is clearly in play on the Outlander GT Prototype, which sports complementary new design elements, such as a reshaped front bumper, side mirrors, fenders and hood. Reshaped Bi-Xenon HID headlamps, a new rear bumper and side sills, plus a bold polished finish on the already standard aluminum roof panel accentuate the sporty appeal.

The Outlander GT Prototype also benefits from improvements to the all-aluminum 3.0-liter SOHC MIVEC V6 currently found in the Outlander XLS, including a reduction in intake restriction plus optimized camshaft timing and compression ratio. The engine changes raise maximum output by 10 horsepower, for a total of 230 horsepower, with an improved torque curve for more responsive city driving and enhanced fuel economy and emissions.

To further increase fuel economy, the Outlander GT Prototype features an upgraded shifting program and Idle Neutral Logic, which automatically, and smoothly, shifts into neutral during vehicle standstill. It reengages at the slightest lift of the foot off the brake pedal, thereby providing instantaneous response.

MITSUBISHI MOTORS CONDUCTS WORLD DEBUT OF OUTLANDER GT PROTOTYPE
AT NEW YORK AUTO SHOW
Features updated exterior, S-AWC, FUSE Handsfree Media Gateway

NEW YORK, April 9, 2009 – Mitsubishi Motors pulled the wraps off its Outlander GT Prototype today, providing clear directional clues into the next generation of the popular Mitsubishi Outlander CUV. The Outlander GT Prototype is loaded with new technology, greater performance, higher fuel efficiency and an aggressive new design. The world debut occurred at the annual New York International Auto Show.

The Outlander GT Prototype features a revised exterior treatment, increased engine output, an advanced S-AWC system, 19-inch OZ Racing wheels, polished aluminum roof, Brembo brakes and the all-new FUSE Handsfree Media Gateway system. A revised interior and freshly added electronic options also help to raise the luxury and comfort levels of the Outlander GT Prototype.

Fresh Exterior Design
The Outlander GT Prototype features a sporty new exterior treatment inspired by Mitsubishi's own Lancer family of automotive products. Designers sought to create a dynamic and athletic presence by utilizing new materials and a wider stance. A "jet fighter" look grille, with design elements from the Lancer Evolution model, has been added to accent the boldly reshaped front bumper, side mirrors, fenders and hood. A byproduct of the new flowing bodylines is a reduction in the coefficient of drag for the Outlander GT Prototype, increasing fuel economy as well as acceleration. Reshaped Bi-Xenon High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlamps also lend an aggressive appearance while a new rear bumper and side sills accent the upscale look.
One show stopping revision is the fully polished treatment on the Outlander GT Prototype's aluminum roof. Standard on all Outlander models and inspired by Mitsubishi racing DNA, the lightweight roof panel lowers the center of gravity and increases the car's handling capability.

More Aggressive Handling
With the Outlander already one of the best handling SUVs on the market, engineers had a great base from which to begin. Slightly lower with the use of a shorter and stiffer suspension, the Outlander GT Prototype lends a menacing and race-bred look with 19-inch OZ Racing wheels and large Brembo brakes.

Super All Wheel Control (S-AWC)
Merging Mitsubishi's experience in off-road and rally racing with production car development, the Outlander GT Prototype features the revolutionary Super All Wheel Control (S-AWC) system. More than just four-wheel drive, S-AWC is a handling system that provides increased handling, traction and stability, while still maintaining maximum fuel economy.

Utilizing a first-in-class active front limited-slip differential and an electronically controlled 4WD coupling, S-AWC can prevent wheel slip between front to rear and side-to-side to enhance tire grip. To the driver of the Outlander GT Prototype, this translates into greater traction through all types of terrain and inclement weather, including ice, snow and rain. By measuring throttle input, wheel speed, engine output, steering angle, gear selection, acceleration and yaw rate and combining that data with input from the Active Stability Control (ASC) and Anti-Lock Brake (ABS) computers, S-AWC can accurately detect driving conditions and adjust accordingly. With S-AWC, the Outlander GT Prototype can turn tighter, find traction and is more stable during cornering, while still returning excellent fuel economy and increased driver feedback. Designed to tackle all variants of road conditions, S-AWC is seamlessly integrated into day-to-day operation, with an ease of use overshadowed only by its ability to deliver passengers safely through all weather situations.

Three selectable S-AWC modes are available on the Outlander GT Prototype, including "Normal", "Snow" and "Traction". Hill Start Assist is also featured, which prevents the vehicle from rolling backwards when starting from a standstill on inclined surfaces.

Increased Engine Output
Improving upon the all-aluminum 3.0-liter SOHC MIVEC V6 currently found in the Outlander XLS, the Outlander GT Prototype features a reduction in intake restriction and an optimization of both camshaft timing and compression ratio for engine efficiency. With these adjustments the maximum engine output for the Outlander GT Prototype has been raised by 10hp, for a total of 230hp, and torque output is available earlier for more practical city driving and improved pickup. The gain in engine efficiency means that the Outlander GT Prototype has improved both in terms of fuel economy and emissions.

To further increase fuel economy towards four-cylinder engine levels, the Outlander GT Prototype has been fit with a revised shifting program and Idle Neutral Logic, which automatically shifts into neutral during vehicle standstill.

FUSE Handsfree Media Gateway
Enhancing the Outlander GT Prototype's functional use is the addition of the all-new FUSE Handsfree Media Gateway system. Offering greater convenience and reduced distractions, the FUSE Handsfree Media Gateway system combines advanced voice-recognition capabilities with Bluetooth 2.0 enabled hands-free calling and audio playback. With the FUSE system, drivers can experience new levels of entertainment convenience while still retaining the capability to focus fully on the road. Automatic phonebook transfer and multiple phone support are both elements of the FUSE Handsfree Media Gateway system, as well as control of the onboard navigation system, which is equipped with a 40GB hard disk drive for quick point-of-interest lookup. Full iPod and USB music device charging and playback are featured as well for portable music compatibility.

More Comfortable Interior
Through the addition of quality soft padding and coverings, the Outlander GT Prototype's interior has taken on a more upscale and luxurious feel. Both comfort and image have improved thanks to the addition of grained synthetic leather, double stitching and chrome accents. Borrowing styling cues from the Lancer Evolution, the Outlander GT Prototype is equipped with aluminum "racing style" pedals and a sport-type steering wheel for improved driver feel. The Outlander GT Prototype also features a new high contrast 3.5-inch QVGA LCD instrument meter, which combines multi-color looks with increased detail for visibility and improved "at a glance" viewing of such engine vitals as fuel level, water temperature and gear selection.

Electronic Additions
The Outlander GT Prototype features a variety of new electronic accessory upgrades. These additional features solidify the Outlander GT Prototype's refined and rich driving experience. The 40GB hard disk drive navigation system is carried over from the Outlander model, although NAVTEQ RDS real time traffic has been added in the Outlander GT Prototype for accurate updates of real-world driving situations. With a 7-inch LCD on board for the navigation display, the Rockford Fosgate in-car entertainment system has been upgraded in the Outlander GT Prototype from 650 watts to 710 watts of power for greater sound detail and quality. A Total Security Alarm System has also been added, which utilizes an accurate ultrasonic wave motion sensor for improved security and detection.
