Charlotte, N.C. (December 6, 2011)– Winner of the 2011 Dakar Rally, Nasser Al-Attiyah confirmed that he will join Robby Gordon and his off-road team in the 2012 edition of the Dakar Rally. Driving one of the highly-modified HUMMERs sponsored by his native country of Qatar, Al-Attiyah will compete for his second consecutive overall Dakar Rally victory.  Should he conquer the South American desert once again, he will be only the second driver to triumph in two different manufactures; Ari Vatanen did so in 1990-1991.

Al-Attiyah has an impressive racing resume and is an accomplished cross-country and classic rally racer. He has won seven FIA Middle East Rally Championships titles since 2003 and collected 13 stage wins in the infamous Dakar Rally from 2009 to 2011.

"I am very excited for the opportunity to defend my title with the big support from my country Qatar and have a new challenge in driving a 2-wheel drive car with Robby Gordon and his team," Al-Attiyah said.

Lucas Cruz, who won as a co-driver in 2010 with Carlos Sainz, will sit along side of Al-Attiyah for the 2012 Rally.

“To have Nasser as a teammate in this year’s Dakar Rally is a huge boost for our team. He brings the excitement and experience of a champion to our team. I personally take it as an honor that he chose our team to defend his 2011 overall win. Between my SPEED Energy HUMMER and his Qatar HUMMER, we have a strong team, cars, and drivers capable of winning the Rally,” commented Robby Gordon.

Nine Japanese Companies to Establish EV Quick-Charging Infrastructure Promotion Organization

Nine Japanese Companies to Establish EV Quick-Charging Infrastructure Promotion Organization

ULVAC, Inc., Kanematsu Corporation, Kandenko Co., Ltd., Suzuyo Shoji Co., Ltd., Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc., Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC), the Development Bank of Japan Inc., Honda Motor Co., Ltd., and Mitsubishi Motors Corporation today agreed to establish an organization to provide membership-based quick-charging services for users of electric vehicles (EVs). The organization, named the Charging Network Development Organization, LLC, aims to encourage increased and widespread use of EVs by helping to expand the scope of charging infrastructure.

As of the end of October, approximately 800 quick chargers have been installed in Japan, a number still viewed as insufficient from a users' standpoint. Until now, quick chargers have generally been installed, at the owner's expense, by businesses and private organizations for private use or as part of a government program. The lack of an effective method to recover costs has become a significant obstacle to widespread installation.

Under the new membership service, quick-charger owners can register their chargers with the organization in a central database. The organization will then make charger information, such as number and location, available to EV users registered as members, thus facilitating convenient and efficient charging. Membership fees will pay a portion of the installation and maintenance costs incurred by quick-charger owners, helping to promote the development of quick-charger infrastructure. The organization plans to start such services in fiscal year 2012.

The concept for the service is the result of investigations conducted by a working group formed at the request from the CHAdeMO Association* to all its members in July 2010. In March 2011, the CHAdeMO Association announced that it would support the commercial development of the service to promote the spread of quick-charging infrastructure.

The organization will seek the cooperation of a broad range of local governments and businesses for the service while working to increase interest in quick-charger installation, thereby establishing a charging infrastructure sufficient to encourage the greater use of EVs and to increase user convenience.

Mitsubishi to Launch New MINICAB-MiEV Commercial Electric Vehicle in Japan

Mitsubishi Motors to Launch New MINICAB-MiEV Commercial Electric Vehicle in Japan
- Prices start from ¥1,730,000 after application of eco-car subsidy -
MINICAB-MiEV CD (10.5kWh)
Tokyo, November 24, 2011 - Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) announced that it will launch the new MINICAB-MiEV*1 minicar-class commercial electric vehicle (EV)-the second product in its next-generation EV lineup-on December 8, 2011 at dealerships throughout Japan. Depending on specification the new model will carry a pre-incentive manufacturer's recommended retail price (MSRP) of between \2,400,000 and \2,971,000, consumption tax included.

Derived from the MINICAB Van minicar-class commercial vehicle, the MINICAB-MiEV has been developed maximizing the technologies and knowhow gained from the development of the i-MiEV in delivering the superior environmental performance inherent to an EV, together with the high levels of operating economy, payload capacity, drivability and reliability demanded of a commercial vehicle.

The MINICAB-MiEV will come with a choice of two sizes of drive battery to allow the customer to choose the cruising range best suited to his or her needs. The CD 10.5 kWh battery version provides a cruising range of 100 km (at JC08 mode) on a single charge, while the CD 16.0 kWh version takes this up to 150 km. MMC has set prices at an accessible level: with the application of the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry's eco-car subsidy, the final cost to the consumer for the CD 10.6 kWh and CD 16.0 kWh battery versions will be reduced to \1,730,000 and \2,020,000 respectively. As with the i-MiEV, the MINICAB-MiEV will be sold on a maintenance lease, credit or cash basis.

When MMC started sales of the i-MiEV new-generation EV in the Japanese market in July 2009 it was the first auto manufacturer to offer a truly "ultimate eco-car" that fully addresses issues facing our society today including environmental pollution, global warming and exhaustion of petroleum-based energy supplies. Since then MMC has sold some 5,000 units in Japan and has shipped a total of about 17,000 units (as of October 31, 2011), including units supplied to PSA Peugeot Citroën. As a leading manufacturer of EVs, MMC is confident that as it expands its lineup of EV models it will serve as pioneers on the path toward quickly making possible a low-carbon society.

Mitsubishi Mirage

Mirage

The Mirage's 2 design focused on compactness, affordability, and high fuel efficiency in order to fit the needs of emerging markets as an affordable entry-level model as well as needs of advanced markets for fuel efficiency and low-CO2 emission. In addition, the Mirage features good maneuverability and easy drivability inherent to a compact car while also providing a comfortable interior space for five adults.

Stems from the English word "mirage." The name was first used for the Mirage series developed for resource/energy/space-saving and high-performance in a compact package which debuted in Japan in March 1978. The new Mirage concept inherits the essence of that first series: cleverly getting the most performance and function out of a limited space.

MMC has targeted top-of-class fuel efficiency (Japan market version) of 30km per liter through a variety of measures including painstaking reduction in weight throughout almost every part of the car, reduction in rolling resistance and higher efficiency through detailed improvements to the engine, transmission, brakes and tires, and an aerodynamic body that reduces air resistance and drag. The new Mirage is due to go on sale first in Thailand in March 2012.

Mitsubishi Concept PX-MiEV II

MITSUBISHI Concept PX-MiEV II

MMC has been focusing its EV technology in the Japanese minicar class. MMC became the first major automobile manufacturer to bring a mass-produced electric vehicle to market when it rolled out the i-MiEV next-generation EV in 2009. The company will introduce its second mass-produced EV-the MINICAB-MiEV minicar-class light commercial EV-in December this year. These models are very popular as city commuters-vehicles used for transporting small groups of passengers over short distances in urban areas.
Concept PX-MiEV II

Not anymore. The MITSUBISHI Concept PX-MiEV II is Mitsubishi Motors' idea for a mid-size plug-in hybrid PHEV model that offers a long cruising range demanded by mid-size (and larger) vehicles. The MITSUBISHI Concept PX-MiEV II contains a state-of-the-art drivetrain derived from MMC's already existing EV technology that delivers the environmental performance and quietness inherent to an EV in an SUV package that provides more comfortable motoring and allows for higher utility outside of a city commuter. The MITSUBISHI Concept PX-MiEV II, with its high environmental performance and fuel efficiency, effectively extinguishes many negative perceptions of SUVs.

MMC's unique plug-in hybrid system fuses EV technology derived from the i-MiEV with a small conventional engine that features MMC's latest fuel and environmental efficiency technologies. This combination provides not only a combined fuel efficiency3 of more than 60km per liter, far superior than that of a conventional engine-driven car, but also very high levels of environmental performance while maintaining a cruising range on a par with conventional engine-driven vehicles (over 800 km).
3:     Representative fuel efficiency figure based on a combination of the vehicle's fuel efficiency when driven in all-electric mode, called the plug-in fuel efficiency, and when driven in hybrid mode, called the hybrid fuel efficiency.

MMC's plug-in hybrid system uses high-capacity batteries that allow the vehicle to cover over 50 km in all-electric mode alone, allowing it to be driven solely as an EV for most everyday situations. Depending on power consumption and remaining battery charge the system will start the engine automatically as a generator, and the engine can also be used to help drive the wheels as necessary. In addition, with the push of a button, the driver has the freedom to select Battery Drive Mode when he/she wishes to drive quietly and emissions-free (at sufficient battery levels) in residential areas or the countryside using pure EV power. At the same time, the driver can also switch to Battery Charge Mode while on the move, controlling use of battery power and using the engine as a generator to charge the batteries.
A socket fitted to the vehicle allows the electricity stored in the drive batteries to be used to power electric appliances when camping or in other outdoor pursuits, or to provide an emergency power source. In addition, the quick-charge port is vehicle-to-home (V2H) compatible.

Another feature of the MITSUBISHI Concept PX-MiEV II apart from its outstanding environmental performance is its drivetrain which uses a newly developed twin-motor four-wheel-drive system mated to Mitsubishi's S-AWC (Super-All Wheel Control) advanced traction control system. Based on the four-wheel-drive technology developed and honed in the Lancer Evolution X models, S-AWC delivers pure driving pleasure by maneuvering effortlessly to the driver's will while maintaining high levels of stability and safety. In addition to superior handling, the MITSUBISHI Concept PX-MiEV II provides 100% instant off-the-line torque inherent to electric motors, giving it acceleration comparable to that of a 3.0-liter V6 engine. The MITSUBISHI Concept PX-MiEV II takes environmentally-friendly vehicles to a new level with its unique blend of fuel and environmental efficiency, performance, and utility.

Mitsubishi's Lineup at the 42nd Tokyo Motor Show

Mitsubishi Motors Lineup at the 42nd Tokyo Motor Show

Tokyo, November 9, 2011 - Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) will be showing a total of 15 vehicles (12 on Press Day 1) at the 42nd Tokyo Motor Show, held at the Tokyo Big Sight convention center in Tokyo from November 30 through December 11 (open to the public from December 3).Two cars will make their world premiere at the show: the Mirage and the MITSUBISHI Concept PX-MiEV II. They respectively embody two major pillars to the company's product strategy outlined in the JUMP 2013 mid-term business plan: global strategic models focused on emerging markets and models featuring "green technology." The Mirage compact car embodies the global model strategy while the MITSUBISHI Concept PX-MiEV II concept SUV features "green technology" with its unique plug-in hybrid drivetrain.
Also at the Mitsubishi Motors booth will be the MINICAB-MiEV light commercial electric vehicle due to be released in the Japanese market in December this year and the i-MiEV new-generation electric vehicle (EV) which is currently on sale in countries all over the world including European countries, and is to be rolled out in the United States by the end of this year. Alongside these will be the RVR compact SUV (ASX or Outlander Sport in some markets) powered by a new MIVEC1 engine that incorporates MMC's Auto Stop & Go (AS&G) idle-stop technology, and the Pajero (Montero or Shogun in some markets) SUV powered by a "clean diesel" engine.

The Mitsubishi Motors booth will also feature the MiEV House, a concept of a "smart house" that tackles energy and global warming by managing energy usage between the home itself, "smart appliances," EVs/plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV), and "smart grids" all at the same time through HEMS (Home Energy Management System) and MMC's own EIS (Electric Vehicle Integration System). HEMS makes life more comfortable for people living in homes installed with it by continually monitoring power available to power being used and optimizing both so that effects of energy shortages and energy costs can be reduced. Connected to a "smart home" with HEMS, EIS constantly monitors EV/PHEV battery usage and efficiency (which varies on how the EV/PHEV is driven), feeds this information to HEMS, which then optimizes charging from the house so that the EV/PHEV always has enough energy in it.
Mirage

In addition to the MiEV House will be the MiEV Cafe, a relaxation space powered by the battery of an electric vehicle parked right beside it. The electric vehicle will power the MiEV Cafe through a new heavy-duty power supply device (also on display) that enables the supply of up to 1500W from EV and PHEV batteries. The heavy-duty power supply device is to go on sale in Japan within this fiscal year.

Citroen C4 AIRCROSS - Citroen's version of the Mitsubishi ASX | RVR | Outlander Sport

Citroen C4 AIRCROSS - Citroen's version of the Mitsubishi ASX | RVR | Outlander Sport

More than 100,000 new Citroën C4 vehicles have rolled of the assembly line since the model was launched one year ago. Following on from this commercial success, the Marque is now extending its C4 range with an original model: the Citroën C4 Aircross. This new vehicle reviews the conventional cues of compact SUV design. By combining style and technological innovation in a single car, the Citroën C4 Aircross is ideally suited to modern lifestyles that introduce a sense of escape into everyday activities. This new body style draws upon the Marque's technological excellence, combining the grip of an off-roader with the ride and driveability of a saloon. Available in 2-wheel and 4-wheel drive versions, depending on the engine, the Citroën C4 Aircross will be launched in the first half of 2012 and will be one of the front-runners in its segment in terms of CO2 emissions.

The styling of the Citroën C4 Aircross draws upon the Marque's DNA, combining the vitality of the other models in the range with the powerful styling of an off-roader.

The distinctive styling includes a front end of horizontal lines with aerodynamic vents at the extremities, accentuating the vehicle's compact appearance. The contours of the bonnet, which is visible from the driver's seat, the wide wheel arches and the reduced overhang all enhance the impression of robustness produced by this unique silhouette.

Close attention went into every detail and each part is designed to combine style and performance. The Citroën C4 Aircross' light signature, visible by day and at night, is formed by the LEDs at the front, which are vertically aligned in the aerodynamic vents. The shape of the large 18-inch wheels and the rear lights, directly inspired by the Hypnos concept car, has been reworked for optimal air flow and reduced CO2 emissions.

The sophisticated design of the Citroën C4 Aircross includes repeater lights in the door mirrors, light guides in the rear lights and a rearview camera built into the chrome trim on the tailgate.

The expressive style draws upon Citroën's distinctive design cues. Seen from the side, the inverted shark fin wing, which also hints at the glass side surfaces of the Hypnos concept car, is decorated with a chrome compass to show that the model is a member of the brand's SUV family.

2013 Peugeot 4008 - Peugeot's version of the Mitsubishi ASX | RVR | Outlander Sport

2013 Peugeot 4008 - Peugeot's version of the Mitsubishi ASX | RVR | Outlander Sport

In line with Peugeot's range enhancement and development strategy, the Peugeot 4008 will be launched initially in the international market which will represent 70% of its sales. With its distinctive, stylish appearance and its 4x4 SUV features, the Peugeot 4008 is a modern response to the needs of all-terrain vehicle customers, in a very prominent market segment.

International launch

The world market of all-terrain SUVs has been growing strongly since 2005. In Russia, all-terrain vehicles have long been predominant and currently account for 20% of the market, the majority being vehicles in the compact SUV segment. However, in China and Western Europe the market share of the SUVs has reached 10%, and covers a variety of expectations. In Europe, this market share of the SUVs in segments C and D is increasing to the detriment of the SUVs of the E segment. In China, it is the attraction of the vehicle's status that is sought after. In Europe, it fulfils the desire for distinctive multipurpose vehicles, compact and with an environmental impact comparable to that of a conventional saloon. Therefore, the Peugeot 4008 is an ideal response to the changes in these markets, it is a competitive vehicle serving the marque's ambition in the international market. Presented as a world première at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, Peugeot 4008 will go on sale initially in international markets from 2012 second quarter.

WiTricity, IHI Corp, and MMC to collaborate on developing easily deployable wireless charging system for Electric Vehicles

WiTricity Corporation, IHI Corporation, and Mitsubishi Motors Corporation Combine to Develop Easily Deployable Wireless Charging Systems for Electric Vehicles

- Partnership to take the first step toward making plugging in obsolete -

Tokyo - September 27, 2011 - WiTricity Corporation (WiTricity), IHI Corporation (IHI) and Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) have agreed to join forces to research and develop easily deployable electric vehicle (EV) wireless charging systems readily compatible with electric grids which will make life easier for EV users in the future. The partnership structure of three major players in the wireless charging, electric infrastructure, and EV areas coming together will accelerate the popularization of wireless charging systems for EVs by developing systems that are usable "right out of the box" for individuals, governments, and other entities including power companies in order to make it easier and quicker for them to roll out such systems.
Image showing how wireless charging systems might be used in the future

The aim of the collaboration is to make EVs remarkably more convenient for owners by accelerating the popularization (and thus availability) of wireless charging at homes and shopping center parking lots, etc.

Wireless charging systems allow transfer of energy from a source placed on or under the ground, to a vehicle equipped with an energy capture device. Charging occurs automatically when the vehicle is parked, with no physical contact between the vehicle and the charging source. WiTricity has already developed and brought to market its patented magnetic resonance wireless charging system*1. The system that WiTricity has developed can transfer energy further and more efficiently in comparison to conventional systems such as electromagnetic induction and microwave transmission, pushing the possibilities of wireless charging by being able to deliver up to 3.3 kW of charging power over distance of 20cm (almost 8 inches) at an efficiency rate of more than 90%, in manner that is safe and very user friendly. Systems based on WiTricity technology offer smaller size and lighter weight as compared to conventional systems, and operate with no moving parts.

CA Gov signs bill allowing EVs to be towed if parking on Charging Station but not actually charging

Calif. Gov. Signs Controversial EV Charging Bill

Over the objection of some of America's staunchest electric-vehicle advocates, California Gov. Jerry Brown has signed into law a bill that allows all-electric battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) as well as plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) to be towed if they park in designated EV-charging parking spaces but are not plugged in. "We think that there's the potential that the law may end up costing the state money, because in essence you now have to have one charger per EV parking space," Jay Friedland, legislative director of the advocacy group Plug In America, told AutoObserver Friday.

In the past, if an electric vehicle (EV) were fully charged, it was acceptable for the owner of an EV parked nearby to unplug the charged vehicle and plug in his or her car, Friedland said. But under the new law, the unplugged car will be at risk of being towed away. Friedland said Plug In America is working with some California lawmakers to introduce a bill early next year that "will fix the problem."

Other opponents complained that PHEVs should not be granted the same right to use the chargers as BEVs, because unlike BEVs they are not entirely dependent on electricity for fuel. PHEVs have onboard gasoline-fuel generators that permit them to generate their own juice once their batteries are depleted. Friedland said Plug In America, possibly the strongest EV advocacy group in the U.S., does not share that sentiment. That's because the group primarily wants vehicles to rely less on fossil fuels and more on electricity, regardless of whether they are plug-in hybrids or BEVs, he said.

2003-2006 Mitsubishi Triton recalled in Australia

Mitsubishi Motors Australia has recalled 9500 Mitsubishi Triton utes over an Australia Design Rule non-compliance issue related to the genuine accessory aluminium trays and towbars.

The recall affects two-wheel drive, four-cylinder, single- and dual-cab variants of the Mitsubishi MK Triton sold in Australia between May 1, 2003 and December 31, 2006.

The official recall notice published on the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission website explains:

Some combinations of genuine accessory aluminium trays and genuine accessory towbars fitted to the affected Triton model vehicles may not comply with part of the Australian Design Rules (ADR 62/01).

The position of the tray relative to the towball mounting may not comply with the Australian Standard AS4177.1 1994 which requires a three-dimensional clearance space around the towball mounting.

Mitsubishi Motors Australia is contacting all affected owners by mail at their last known address. Current owners are advised to contact their authorised Mitsubishi dealership for inspection and, if necessary, replacement of the towbar tongue.

MMNA to end production of the Eclipse and Endeavor this week.

NORMAL -- The last of the Eclipse coupes, Spyder convertibles and Endeavor SUVs will roll off Mitsubishi assembly lines at the end of the week.
Mitsubishi Eclipse

The Normal plant will then begin a retooling process that will result in the production of the Outlander Sport crossover SUV by mid-2012. Mitsubishi Motors North America will produce the Galant for about another year.
Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder

MMNA spokesman Dan Irvin said the plant's 1,300 workers are somewhat sentimental as they say goodbye to the current models, but are excited about the future. In February, Japanese parent company Mitsubishi Motors Corp. announced a $100 million investment in the plant to produce the Outlander Sport.

"The Eclipse and Spyder are something our brand was identified with," said Irvin. "But I think everybody is looking ahead and focuses very much on that. Whether you get a new job, or house, or appliance, or car, you're more excited about the new one and the opportunities to come than dwelling on what got you this far."
Mitsubishi Endeavor

The Eclipse, Spyder and Endeavor will be available for purchase through at least the end of 2011, and MMNA will continue to make service parts for those models for six to seven years, said Irvin.

South Africa gets facelifted Triton as CBU from Thailand

Mitsubishi is changing its Triton one-tonners in South Africa by offering a facelifted model that is imported as a fully built-up unit and not assembled locally, as has been the case in the past.

The new pick-ups will take over from the Triton line that was introduced in 2007 - the year when it replaced the Colt that has been in SA since 1990.

The Colt helped to propel Mitsubishi's success with sales of over 20 000 units.

The latest Triton models are made at a plant in Thailand that exports to all major first world countries for Mitsubishi Motors. That same plant has already exported more than a million vehicles since 1988 when it became the first Thai motor vehicle exporter and has won several quality awards for the units produced there.

Mitsubishi Motors South Africa opted for an import route for the Triton because it offers greater flexibility in terms of product specification and better supply rates than when a product is locked into local production.

The new range has an updated grille, headlights and front bumper as well as a new-look step bumper at the rear and restyled alloy wheels on all models.

Mitsubishi launches Limited Edition of Outlander Chrome in India

Japanese car maker, Mitsubishi Motors has launched a limited edition model of their SUV Outlander in India, christened as the Outlander Chrome Edition. The new features of Mitsubishi Outlander Chrome Edition includes larger rear spoiler, molding protection on the side, side air dam, roof mounted DVD player, floor illumination, door mirror cover with chrome plating and a few state of the art gadgets on the inside.

The car is now available at all the authorized Mitsubishi dealers across India. There is not a single change made in the engine department. Mitsubishi Outlander Chrome Edition will be powered by the same petrol powered four cylinder 2.4L engine. The launch of a limited edition Outlander can be termed as a marketing gimmick by Mitsubishi Motors.

We hope Mitsubishi launches a diesel variant of Outlander in India soon as that is what will create a real sense of excitement amongst Indian car buyers. Instead of adding cosmetic upgrades to their existing vehicles, Mitsubishi Motors should launch new variants, preferably hatchbacks, in the Indian auto industry in order to grow.

Sebastien Loeb extends his Citroen WRC contract for 2 more years

Sebastien Loeb will continue in the World Rally Championship for at least another two more seasons after agreeing a deal to remain with the factory Citroen squad until the end of the 2013 season.

Loeb’s future with the French make and, indeed, the WRC has been the subject of considerable speculation in recent months with suggestions that the 37-year-old Frenchman would call time on his rallying career if he captured an eighth world crown this year. He currently leads the standings following his breath-taking victory on Neste Oil Rally Finland last month.

In a statement, Loeb said: “With the arrival of other manufacturers in the championship, the competition is going to get tougher in the years to come. All the more so with the rule changes concerning the starting order coming in in 2012 as all the drivers will be fighting on a level playing field. To take the fight to them I’m putting my trust in Citroen, a team I know inside out and the DS3 WRC, the car that I helped [develop] with Citroen Racing.”

Loeb has been part of the Citroen family since 2001. He claimed his maiden WRC event win with the firm, on Rallye Deutschland, in 2002 and captured his first world crown driving a Citroen Xsara WRC in 2004. To date he has taken 66 victories in the world championship alongside co-driver Daniel Elena, who will continue alongside Loeb for another two seasons.
